Body

Between 1990 and 1994, at the initiative of Pastor Incze Zoltán, the church was built on the site of the demolished old church, using the original plans. The identification of a regional archetype and its restoration on a village scale formed the fundamental motivation of the 1948 design, which was realized posthumously between 1990 and 1994. The existing free-standing bell tower and the wall surrounding it were preserved as participants in an ancient composition, made dramatic by the fact that the architect deliberately added the missing element: the church itself. The recognition of these relationships, together with a formal language deeply rooted in an abstract understanding of local architectural vocabulary, creates this composition with great strength and absolute simplicity. The harmony of the church interior—owing equally to the architect’s vision and to the contributions of artists and local residents—is a direct realization of the creative energy that Kós Károly recognized in vernacular architecture.
