Body

Workers’ housing was constructed in several parts of the city. For example, along the main thoroughfare at the northern edge of the city, five single-storey workers’ dwellings were built. Of these designs, four are semi-detached houses (each containing two apartments). The fifth, slightly larger building is characterized by a roof form similar to that of the Kangaroo House of 1908–1909, with a transverse gabled roof placed at the center. All five buildings feature open porches with semicircular arches at both ends.

The small housing group closely resembles contemporary workers’ housing schemes, both in Hungary and abroad (for example, Tessanov, Germany). Kós formed the plinths of the buildings in brick rather than in stone, which he more frequently employed elsewhere. In the southwestern part of the city, several dozen buildings of this type are arranged around a central square; the single-storey variant can most likely be attributed to Kós. All of the buildings have undergone minor alterations and extensions over time.
