Bison and Buffalo House (Budapest Zoo and Botanic Gardens)

For my son we built a new house of sturdy log construction on a stone foundation, and between the old and the new house we also built a proper watchtower with a porch, likewise of log construction.”

The source of inspiration for the Bison and Buffalo House was the chronicle passage quoted above, describing the fortified medieval homestead of a small landowning nobleman in Kalotaszeg and his son. On this basis, Kós reconstructed the image of a minor noble’s enclosed manor. This imagined reconstruction exerted a strong influence on his work at the time, including several early sketch designs for Varjúvár (1909).
Rubble stone, log timber, and shingle roofing dominate the building. The two independent “houses” are connected by a corridor from which rises a lookout-like tower with log-built walls. This solution also appears in the unbuilt designs for the manor house of Béla Fekete Nagy in Cluj (1910) and for the Reformed church in Csúcs (1911).
Due to damage sustained during the Second World War, the building was demolished. Reconstruction was carried out only in 2010, using the original plans.
