Body

This Reformed church design was intended to be realized at a popular resort in the renowned Harghita mountain range of eastern Transylvania. The rectangular ground plan with choir galleries at both ends, the freestanding bell tower beside the building, and the finely detailed covered entrance are features that recur throughout Kós’s church designs over the course of his career. The alpine setting and the natural environment were undoubtedly decisive factors in the architect’s choice of materials: the extensive use of timber and stone is characteristic of the design.

The conceptual antecedents of this project can be found in earlier residential designs, such as the Varjúvár sketch (Small House in Transylvania), as well as in the holiday houses designed for the surrounding region in the 1920s and 1930s (the Csibi House, the Csík Sanatorium, and the Szentimrei House).
