Body
Kós presented two design variants for the renovation and expansion of this medieval church. The primary difference between the two versions lies in the position of the tower: in one it is directly attached to the main façade (Version II), while in the other it is set slightly back from the plane of the façade and forms an organic unity with the church entrance (Version I). Neither version was selected; instead, in the final design the tower was placed at the center of the façade. While Kós’s design preserves some of the medieval character of the original church, the scale and extent of the reconstruction—especially the dominance of the new interior space—greatly diminish the presence of the old structure. As at Szék, Kós accepted the addition of a semi-transept wing to provide space for more seating. Whereas at Szék this does not detract from the church’s overall character, in this case the new wing becomes a dominant feature, a circumstance further reinforced by the fact that the tower was never built. The interior of the church is noteworthy not for its historical character, but because detailed drawings survive of every element of the beautiful interior design: doors and windows, metalwork, seating, the pulpit, and the coffered ceiling.
