Body

The construction and maintenance of the graves of Sándor Petőfi and the honvéd soldiers who fell alongside him in 1848 were organized by the national central public education department of the Hungarian People’s Alliance, in cooperation with local organizations. In 1948, the centenary of the events was commemorated. The inhabitants of the village of Fehéregyháza undertook the construction of the planned cultural center.

The entrance gate and fence were intended to enclose the graves and memorial of Sándor Petőfi and the heroes who fell in the Battle of Fehéregyháza during the War of Independence of 1848–1849. The steeply pitched tiled roof is supported by a timber structure resting on a stone base, while the adjoining fence is built of stone with wooden post infill and roof tiles. The gate strongly recalls the entrance of the Székely National Museum built in 1912. The cultural center itself resembles a large, two-storey alpine house, especially when viewed against its backdrop of pine forest. The arched entrance projects from the otherwise restrained exterior, whose character is, as usual, defined by the dominant roof form and its details, partially incorporating the attic level.
